Ein kleines weites Meer is the first release from the minimalist music project In the making by German singer Christian Ronig and Greek pianist Yann Keerim. Both artists met in 2023 and, after realising that they share the same artistic approach, they decided to work together. Ein kleines weites Meer is a cover version of the Greek classic “Mia thalassa mikri” by one of Greece’s most popular contemporary songwriters Dionysis Savvopoulos. The original lyrics were translated by Ronig into his mother tongue German.
Recorded live at Electricity Sound Studio, Athens, Ein kleines weites Meer conveys the intimacy of the artists’ approach. Keerim treats the piano as a living being: alongside the ever-so-gentle shifts of emotive harmonies of his neoclassical minimalist piano sound, you can hear the keys, hammers and pedals of the piano, creating a living, breathing ambience full of tension and inscrutable sensuality. The careful use of analogue synthesisers supports the notion of contemporary neo-romanticism. Ronig’s unadorned narrator’s voice adds to the depth of the duo’s performance, resulting in a unique and sincere musical experience.
Ein kleines weites Meer is the first single of a constantly developing album entitled “In the making“. With In the making, singer Christian Ronig and pianist Yann Keerim pioneer the concept of evolving albums, that emphasises continuity and captures the essence of the now.
The aim is to immerse both artists and listeners in a dynamic, ever-changing musical landscape. With each new release, audiences witness the progression of inspiration and creativity over time. Each track reflects the artists’ current state of mind, ensuring a fresh and unique experience with every release.
However, the artistic concept focuses on the purity and clarity of sound, stripping away all but the essential elements to create an intimate, contemplative musical experience. Keerim’s neoclassical minimalist piano sound provides a sparse, yet emotive harmonic foundation to create a serene and meditative atmosphere, while Ronig’s voice delivers clear, unadorned vocal lines with a focus on natural expression and emotional depth. Depending on the needs of each song Ronig and Keerim invite solo instrumentalists. After each release, the artists decide what to record next, ensuring that both the artists and the audience are always excited about what is to come.
All new releases are stacked on top of the existing ones, resulting in a constantly evolving album.
